About the Scion tCAs a compact hatchback coupe, the Scion tC faces a lot of competition. However, it manages to distinguish itself in a number of key ways. Most notably, the tC boasts an attractively-low starting MSRP. The front-wheel drive vehicle comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, although a six-speed automatic is also available. Despite its compact size, the tC pulls off an incredible 35.4 cubic feet of storage space when its rear seats are folded down, making it a superb option for those who regularly travel with a lot of belongings. While Scion is a division of Toyota, which is based in Japan, it is headquartered in Torrance, California. Currently, the Scion tC is manufactured in Tsusumi, Japan. Its 2.5-liter, inline-4 engine – which is the only one available – pulls off 180 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. The world first got a peek at the Scion tC at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2004. The first vehicles hit dealer lots in June of that year. Since there was never any intention of offering various options for the tC, Scion loaded up the first generation of the tC with plenty of features: keyless entry, side mirror-mounted turn signals and a very low price. The second-generation tC debuted in 2010 at the New York Auto Show; a wide track, Vehicle Stability Control and blacked-out A-pillars were all thrown into the mix. There is only a single trim level offered for the Scion tC. The only factory option, a six-speed automatic transmission, is wildly popular. However, there are several dealer-installed options available, including a remote ignition, seven-color interior ambient lighting and a cargo cover. Its interior has a remarkably sporty look. As long as drivers are willing to overlook the cheap materials, the tC is sure to please. Rock-bottom pricing has always set the Scion tC apart from the rest. In 2005, it was named a Consumer Guide Recommended Buy. The following year, it was listed as a Consumer Guide Best Buy. In 2005, it was a serious contender for Motor Trend Car of the Year and was listed as a Highest Ranked Sporty Car in Initial Quality by J.D. Power and Associates.
