About the Pontiac SolsticeThe Pontiac Solstice is a two-seat sports car sold as a convertible or coupe. It has a front engine design and rear-wheel drive. With a lack of cargo space and only modest performance for a sports car, the Solstice is designed for entry-level sports car buyers rather than the hardcore enthusiast.Solstices with the base trim have a four-cylinder engine producing 177 horsepower. The GXP Solstices have a turbocharged four-cylinder engine putting out 260 horsepower. The base engine is expected to make 19 miles per gallon in city driving and 28 on the highway. The Solstice ceased production for the 2009 model year as Pontiac struggled with financial problems. GM shut down the Solstice's plant in 2009. Pontiac was retired as a brand in 2010. GM initially considered moving the Solstice to another of its brands or selling the design, but has chosen not to. The Solstice is available in either base or GXP trim. The base trim has 18-inch alloy wheels, a limited-slip rear differential, and an audio system. GXP trim includes a turbocharged engine, performance upgrades, and Bluetooth capabilities. Most of the GXP's features can be purchased for the base trim. Optional upgrades include air conditioning, leather upholstery, and a high-quality audio system. The Club Sport and Premium packages are available for either trim. The Club Sport package tunes the suspension for sportier performance. The Premium package substitutes leather seating and a leather wrapping for the steering wheel. The convertible model is eligible for the Street Edition package. The Street Edition includes the Premium package, air conditioning, and an audio system with seven speakers. NADA named the 2009 Solstice as one of its Best Car Buys. Planet Green listed the 2009 Solstice as one of its Most Efficient Two-Seaters. The NHTSA gave the Solstice a five star rating for rollover crash safety.
