The Galant has been in production since 1969; during this time, it has gone through nine generations of redesigns, added features, larger engines and larger body. It began as a compact car in 1969 and evolved into a mid-size sedan. In earlier models, 2-door coupes and 4- and 5-door sedans were available. However, only a 4-door model was offered in 2009. This model also featured the largest of all the engines available in its history, having a 3.8 liter V6 capable of producing 190 horsepower.
The 2009 model had the most significant interior space of all the models during its 42-years of production. With added legroom came extra pounds, which in turn lowered fuel economy. Limited editions were given alloy wheels, a manufacturer's body kit and leather interior, while standard models were given cloth seats. The Sport models include automatic transmissions on the four-cylinder engines, while 5-speed transmissions are reserved for the V6 engines.
