About the Mazda 2The Mazda2 is a four-door subcompact that combines an enjoyable driving experience with an inexpensive price point. With an aerodynamic wedge style body shape, the Mazda 2 maximizes interior space while maintaining one of the smallest profiles among North American automobiles. Marketed as a five passenger hatchback, no more than four adults can comfortably fit inside the cabin. Although it lacks luxury features, the Mazda2 offers basic comfort, excellent fuel efficiency and standard amenities. Its small size will appeal to drivers that negotiate the crowded streets of heavily populated urban areas. In developing the Mazda2, designers were committed to the goal of providing safe, reliable and economical transportation. Inexpensive and proven engineering integrates front wheel drive, rear drum brakes and a torsion beam rear suspension into the vehicle. A 1.5 liter inline four cylinder engine powers the car and delivers 100 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque. A five speed manual transmission is standard, while a four speed automatic is optional. Fuel economy... View more is an EPA estimated 28 mpg city/35 mpg highway for the manual transmission, and 27 mpg city/33 mpg highway for the automatic. The Mazda2 was developed and engineered by the Mazda Design Team and is manufactured in both Hiroshima and Hofu, Japan. Although the Mazda2 was introduced into the North American market as a completely new model, its heritage can be traced back to the Mazda Demio. Introduced in 1996, the Demio was a hatchback/minivan hybrid that was sold exclusively in Japan. In 2002, the Demio was redesigned and incorporated into the popular DY platform. While the vehicle retained the recognizable Demio name in Japan, it was renamed the Mazda2 for other markets. The third generation Mazda2 shares the same architecture as the Ford Fiesta, but has been engineered to appeal to entirely different segments of the market. In fact, the two vehicles share only four common parts. The Fiesta is larger, more powerful and has superior fuel economy. The Mazda2 is available in either a Sport or Touring trim package. The Sport trim package includes power windows, keyless entry, side airbags, torso protecting airbags, power locks, an MP3 auxiliary jack and a four speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 combo stereo. The Touring trim package adds cruise control, a six speaker audio system and better quality cloth seats. While the Mazda2 doesn't offer features that appeal to tech savvy drivers such as Bluetooth and USB connectivity, its lower entry cost continues to attract a younger demographic. Throughout its history, the Mazda2 has been the recipient of over 50 international awards including the prestigious World Car of the Year" (WCOTY) award for 2008. View less Mazda 2 Model Years | |||
