![]() About the Ford FlexFamilies looking for a vehicle that includes the best features of an SUV and a minivan are turning to the Ford Flex in droves. The full-size crossover, which can comfortably accommodate up to seven passengers in its standard configuration, is a roomy and stylish vehicle. The four-door Flex comes standard with front-wheel drive, and the available all-wheel drive is a very popular option. However, its large appearance from the outside belies its cargo capacity of only 83 cubic feet with rear seats lowered, a lot less space than many other cars in its class.Like the Lincoln MKX and the Ford Edge, the Flex is manufactured at Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. The vehicle was designed at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. When fitted with the... View more available Class III Trailer Tow Package, the Flex has a towing capacity of 4,500 pounds. Its standard 3.5-liter V6 engine generates 262 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. The available turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 produces 355 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Not surprisingly, fuel economy is average. The Flex is one of the newest vehicles in Ford's lineup. It was unveiled during the New York International Auto Show in 2007. The first Flex model sold was the 2009, presented to the market in the middle of 2008. Aside from a few relatively minor cosmetic tweaks, and the addition of the optional turbocharged engine in 2010, little has changed in the overall design and execution of the Ford Flex. For 2011, the new titanium trim debuted, and an optional power-folding third-row seat was introduced. Horizontal grooves along the rear and sides of the Ford Flex lend it a distinct appearance that is reminiscent of old fashioned wood-paneled station wagons. Blacked-out pillars and windows, and a white, silver or color-coordinated roof add to the vehicle's unique style. Its interior is particularly appealing. Popular options include second-row sliding and reclining captain's chairs, the Vista moon roof and a rear console refrigerator. The rear DVD entertainment system is a popular choice among Flex owners. Many opt for the turbocharged V6 engine, for which the fuel economy is surprisingly comparable to that of the regular V6. As a new model, the Flex has not yet acquired many awards. Still, it has earned a few notable accolades. The National Automotive History Collection named it the Collectible Vehicle of the Future" in 2009. In 2010, auto123.com named the Flex the "Full-Size Utility Vehicle of the Year". Most notably, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety listed the Ford Flex as a "Top Safety Pick" for 2010, further bolstering its appeal to families. View less | |||
