The Audi A8 (D2) was released in North America in 1997. It was the first car built on a completely aluminum platform. It was then available in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive with the V6 or V8 engine. The front-wheel drive version was dropped in 2000. A second generation V8 (D3), which was released in 2003 in the U.S., was slightly larger than its predecessor. The new compact FSI W12 engine was added in 2005, when the model also received a slight facelift. An S8 engine sports variant followed in 2006. In late 2009, the 4.2-liter V8 engine replaced both the W12 and S8 engines. Finally, the D4 was introduced to the market in 2011.
